Chapter Fifteen

Reality bitch-slapped her brain the minute it cleared. Caught between the wall and Jack's big, hard, sweaty body, she couldn't stop the panic that exploded in her mind, the need to strike out at the threat that stood too close and was way too strong. She didn't even realize she was throwing punches until Jack staggered back, a hand on his reddening chest, his "Goddamn it, Maddie!" like a cold cup of water to the face.

She sagged against the wall, shivers rattling her bones.

Jack figured it out before she had to tell him. His face softened, eyes concerned as he tucked himself back into his jeans. "Wildcat, it's--"

"Don't tell me it's all right. Don't! It's not all right and-- God," she moaned, one hand coming up to cover her face, "what have I done?"

Jack stepped toward her. Maddie tried to move back, slide along the wall, but something was under her boot. Catching herself as she stumbled, she managed to grab on to the fact that her jeans were tangled around her ankles, keeping her from getting away. Embarrassment flooded her. She had to move, now, before he came at her again. Had to get dressed. Had to get away from him.

Maddie fumbled her jeans around until she could pull the leg back over her boot before yanking the material up her shaking limbs. Jack paced before her, not coming closer but cursing under his breath, his fists opening and closing as he moved. He sounded angry.

How had she gotten herself into this mess?

Keeping her eyes firmly on Jack, she moved back, one step, then another, until she came to the corner of the room. The wall at her back felt solid, safe. Maddie let herself slide down it to crouch, huddled, surrounded by walls. Not arms, never arms. A sudden, powerful longing for her mother to hold her, for her parents, who didn't even know where the hell she was, rose out of nowhere, a need so strong she shut her eyes, able to battle it and nothing else. Because she couldn't afford to give in to that longing. Her parents weren't here. No one was going to hold her. Nobody cared that she was scared out of her freaking mind and confused and trying desperately not to throw up. She had to get herself through, just like she had for four years.

God, she'd let him touch her. Let him take her. And she'd enjoyed it. How could she enjoy something so-- Images rose to haunt her, not of Jack but of David, of the things he'd done, made her do. Of that last night, the pain. They flooded her mind, so sudden and violent that she gagged. The bile in her throat made her panic. David always punished her if she threw up, always.

Hold it in. Hold it in.

The words never broke from her clenched throat. She was screaming inside, going down into that place where she was bound, helpless, unclean. And her body was protesting in the only way it knew how.
